Decadent Dark Chocolate Strawberries

Whether you’re preparing for a romantic evening, celebrating a special occasion, or just want a little sweet treat, chocolate-covered strawberries are the perfect choice. As with most simple recipes (like these dark chocolate nut clusters!), this is one that’s all about the quality of the ingredients used and the technique.

Why You’ll Love These Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

  • Two simple ingredients. All you need are strawberries and chocolate to make your own chocolate-covered strawberries at home. That’s it!
  • Quick and easy. These decadent-yet-healthy treats take just 20 minutes to make, so they’re a perfect last-minute dessert option.
  • Customizable. Although I usually just use a high-quality dark chocolate, there are so many options for toppings and embellishments here. Make them your own!
  • Elegant presentation. Chocolate-covered strawberries are fantastic for bridal and baby showers, holiday brunches, and anytime you want something special for dessert.

What You’ll Need

The ingredients for chocolate-covered strawberries are as simple as can be. Scroll down to the recipe card below for exact measurements.

  • Dark semi-sweet chocolate – Not only does dark chocolate have less sugar than milk chocolate, I also think it tastes better for chocolate-dipped strawberries.
  • Strawberries – Look for firm, ripe, large berries. If you can find strawberries with long stems, that’s even better!

How to Make Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

Here’s a quick overview of the steps involved in making chocolate-covered strawberries. See the recipe card below for more detailed instructions.

  1. Prepare. Rinse and dry the strawberries.
  2. Melt the chocolate. Microwave the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl on HIGH for 30 seconds. Stir, then continue to heat in 30 second intervals until the chocolate is smooth when stirred.
  3. Dip the strawberries. One by one, dip the strawberries in the chocolate and place them on wax paper to set.
  4. Serve. Once the chocolate is set, you can eat the strawberries or refrigerate them for a firmer coating.

Tips for Success

  • Dry the strawberries VERY well. Any moisture on the strawberries can cause the chocolate to seize and become grainy. I dry them one by one on paper towels to make sure they’re completely dry before dipping.
  • Use strawberries that are fairly firm. If your strawberries are soft and mushy, it’s a sign that they’re on the verge of going bad. It will also make it difficult for the chocolate to stick to them.
  • Pick a high-quality chocolate. As I mentioned above, this is a recipe that’s all about the quality of ingredients. Choose a dark chocolate that’s delicious enough to snack on!
  • Don’t overheat the chocolate. If you do, it will become chunky and separated.
  • Work quickly. The chocolate will thicken and then harden as it cools, so dip the strawberries quickly. Make sure they’re completely dry and ready to go before you melt the chocolate.

Topping and Garnish Ideas

  • Add a drizzle of white chocolate. After dipping the strawberries in dark chocolate, use a fork to drizzle melted white chocolate over them for an elegant finishing touch. Or, transfer the melted white chocolate to a squeeze bottle for a little more control.
  • Sprinkle with crushed nuts. Roll the dipped strawberries in crushed nuts for added crunch and texture.
  • Give them some color with sprinkles. For a festive touch, dip the strawberries in sprinkles.

Proper Storage

Place the strawberries in a single layer in an airtight container lined with wax paper. Refrigerate and enjoy within 2 days.
